With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our dear friend Mickey Weems, who left us on March 20, 2023. Mickey’s vibrant spirit and contagious zest for life have truly touched everyone lucky enough to know him. His love for dancing, storytelling, and celebrating life has inspired us all.
Mickey’s passion for dance was truly exceptional. From his early years through to the very end, he found comfort and happiness on the dance floor, especially when swaying to the lively rhythms of house music. His commitment to dance reflected his indomitable spirit and his determination to not let cancer dictate his journey.
Even in tough times, Mickey embraced life fully. He enjoyed the little things, from sharing laughter with friends to relishing candy-coated popcorn. His strength during his battle with cancer reminds us to cherish each day with gratitude and joy.
Mickey’s adventurous spirit shone brightly, as seen in his pursuit of new experiences, like fire dancing, even when facing health challenges. His fearless approach to the unknown and his ability to find joy amidst uncertainty are lessons we can all treasure.
Mickey’s legacy goes far beyond his passion for dance. As an Ohio State University graduate and co-founder of the Qualia: Festival of Gay Folklife, his influence on the community was truly significant. His published works and creative contributions, including “The Fierce Tribe: Masculine Identity and Performance in the Circuit” and “Stigmata,” continue to enlighten and inspire us.
As we reflect on Mickey’s wonderful life, let’s honor his memory by celebrating each moment, discovering joy in the everyday, and following our passions with our whole hearts. Though Mickey has left this world, his spirit lives on in the laughter, tales, and dance moves he generously shared with us.
To our beloved Mickey Weems, a remarkable dancer, educator, and friend—may your spirit dance on, encouraging us to live life passionately and joyfully. Rest peacefully, Mickey.
